Richard Avedon
The photographer of this portrait is Richard Avedon, he was born in 1923 in New York City. He studied photography at The New School for Social Research in New York with Alexey Brodovitch. He was mainly a fashion photographer and his main subjects were usually celebrities. Because he usually took pictures of celebrities I was familiar with a portrait of Marilyn Munroe he took. I intended on doing one of Marilyn Munroe but I came across this image which was a lot cooler. In my emulation I tried to recreate the outfit the model had on, chose a similar background, and the same interesting pose. The point of view in the photo is straight on and asymmetrical. It follows the rule of thirds with the torso of the model being the center focal point because of the plain background. The photo is horizontal and the interesting lines created by the arms and legs of the model take your eyes through the photo. The composition is very creative because it looks like the model is falling and the action is caught on camera. The point of view is common for a portrait but the pose makes the photo artistic and unusual. It creates a mysterious mood because when a person looks at the photo and wonders how this was possible.
